Week 9: Fieldwork

For Week 9, we explored the topic "IIUM as a Sustainable Campus - Students as Agents of Change" on 10th December 2024. Although there was no face-to-face class, this week’s fieldwork gave us the chance to reflect on our role in making our campus more sustainable.


Our group, Zerowaste Visionaries, chose the KAED (Kulliyyah of Architecture and Environmental Design) as our location for observation. KAED is full of creative ideas and innovative spaces that connect perfectly to the sustainability efforts happening on campus. We took some meaningful photos of our group and observed three key elements that highlight sustainability: recycling efforts, transforming an old bus into a cafΓ©, and using Beam e-scooters for transportation.

Here are the three lessons conclusion from my opinion or my view of thinking:


1. Recycling is the Foundation of Sustainability

At KAED, we noticed how recycling bins are placed strategically around the area to encourage students to manage their waste properly. This shows how small, consistent actions like recycling can contribute to a cleaner campus. As students, we can promote this by spreading awareness about sorting waste, reusing materials, and actively using the bins provided. Recycling is the first step to reducing waste and preserving resources on campus.


2. Creativity Can Drive Sustainable Innovation

One of the coolest things we observed was an old bus that had been transformed into a cafΓ©. Instead of letting the bus go to waste, it was repurposed into a functional and inviting space. This taught us that sustainability isn’t just about recycling but it’s about rethinking how we use resources. As students, we can contribute by coming up with creative ideas to repurpose or upcycle unused materials or spaces, reducing waste while adding value to our campus.


3. Sustainable Transportation is the Future

KAED is also a hub for Beam e-scooters, which provide an eco-friendly transportation option for students. These scooters reduce our reliance on cars or motorbikes, cutting down on carbon emissions. As students, we can contribute by choosing these greener transportation options whenever possible and encouraging others to do the same. It’s a small step, but when many people take it, the impact becomes significant.

In conclusion, these lessons remind us that sustainability is not just the responsibility of institutions but it’s a shared effort. By recycling, rethinking how we use resources, and choosing greener transportation, we can actively contribute to making IIUM a truly sustainable campus. 

As students, we’re not just observers but we’re agents of change. Every small action we take today can lead to a bigger impact tomorrow. Let’s continue working together to make our campus and communities more sustainable!
