Week 3: The Five Necessities of Human Existence (Maqasid Shariah)
This week, there was no face-to-face lecture, but we had the opportunity to engage in a meaningful activity by visiting the IIUM Gallery, located on the ground floor of the Rectory or MAF Building.
Upon arriving at the gallery with my group, we were immediately captivated by the rich displays showcasing the essence of Maqasid Shariah and its connection to sustainable development. As we explored, we took some interesting photos and a group picture to capture the experience.
Visiting the IIUM Gallery was an insightful experience, linking the timeless wisdom of Maqasid Shariah with modern sustainable practices. I highly recommend this activity to anyone looking to deepen their understanding of Islam’s contributions to sustainability.

Maqasid Shariah: The Five Necessities of Human Existence
Maqasid Shariah refers to the goals of Islamic law designed to protect and preserve the fundamental necessities of human life. These five essentials are crucial for individual and societal well-being.
1. Protection of Religion (Hifz ad-Din)
Religion is central to human purpose and morality. Maqasid Shariah ensures freedom of worship and guards against practices that harm faith and spirituality.
2. Protection of Life (Hifz an-Nafs)
Human life is sacred in Islam. The law emphasizes preserving life, preventing harm, and promoting safety and health in society.
3. Protection of Intellect (Hifz al-Aql)
The intellect is vital for reasoning and decision-making. Islam forbids substances like alcohol or drugs that impair judgment and promotes education as a means to develop knowledge.
4. Protection of Lineage (Hifz an-Nasl)
Islam safeguards family and societal values by promoting lawful relationships, ensuring the protection of children, and forbidding acts that harm family structures.
5. Protection of Wealth (Hifz al-Mal)
Wealth is a trust to be used responsibly. Islamic law prohibits theft, fraud, and interest (riba), and encourages fair trade, charity (zakat), and economic justice.
In conclusion, Maqasid Shariah provides a holistic framework for safeguarding human existence. By protecting religion, life, intellect, lineage, and wealth, it ensures balance, justice, and harmony in society.
