Week 1: Introduction To Sustainable Development
Assalamualaikum Wbt. My name is Annur Yasmin Binti Basuni. I'm from department of Quantity Surveying (KAED). Walking into the classroom of SCSH 1201 for the first time, I felt a mix of excitement and nervousness. The lecturer introduced the course syllabus and explained how this class connects to real-world applications. This made me feel motivated to learn because I could already see its relevance. I hope to improve my understanding of this subject this semester and gain skills that will help me academically and personally.
Class Overview
On the first day of class, we began by introducing ourselves, sharing our names, place of birth, the cost of subjects taken at the university, and highlighting one thing about ourselves that people don't know. Additionally, we each shared a word related to Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). The professor then provided an overview of the course framework, including assignments and key expectations. We also discussed the IIUM building infrastructure and how it relates to current challenges such as environmental ecosystems and sustainability.
This week’s lecture focused on the concept of sustainable development. Sustainable development refers to meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. It emphasizes a balance between economic growth, environmental protection, and social well-being.
The lecture covered the key principles of sustainable development, including:
What is System Thinking – Understanding how different components of a system interact and influence one another to achieve sustainability.
Environmental, Social, and Economic Dimensions – The three pillars of sustainable development that emphasize environmental conservation, social equity, and economic growth.
Unsustainable Exploitation of Resources – Overuse of natural resources leading to environmental degradation and depletion.
Basic Concept of Sustainability – Achieving development that balances current needs without compromising future generations.
Five Dimensions of SDG – The Sustainable Development Goals focus on five key areas: People, Planet, Prosperity, Peace, and Partnership.
We also discussed global frameworks like the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which include 17 Goals, 169 Targets and 240 Indicators and also transition from MDGs to SDGs.
In summary, sustainable development is a holistic approach to creating a better future by addressing environmental, social, and economic challenges together.
